I like the cover, but I think I think it really takes away from the character of the original song. The original is coming from the perspective of someone much less confident in themselves, but still trying to cover up their nervousness with humor.
Don’t get me wrong, I love my Tay Tay, but it really changes the nature of the song, and what really makes it meaningful; her version just sounds like a very generic well sung, strong female vocal single. Which in and of itself isn’t bad, but you lose the originality and the emotion of the original.
Interesting take — thanks for sharing your view on the cover! I actually never heard (or heard of) the song “Riptide” until I heard Taylor’s cover, then I went and listened to the original. I like her voice more than his, but I also like how her style of singing is more direct and straightforward than his…he sings with a lilt that obscures the words, for me. I’ve read the lyrics but still don’t really understand what the song is about.
