Corin Tucker Band @ Mercury Lounge

Corin Tucker’s band, aka Corin Tucker Band, played Thursday night at Mercury Lounge to support their second album, Kill My Blues, which came out last week.

The crowd definitely enjoyed hearing the new batch of songs, which are slightly louder and rockier than the band’s first album 1,000 Years.

The best, catchiest song of the set was “Joey.” Here’s a good video from last week of Corin Tucker Band playing “No Bad News Tonight”:

Christy & Emily @ Mercury Lounge

Christy & Emily opened for Lavender Diamond last night at NY’s Mercury Lounge.

The duo was joined by a drummer, bassist, and (on a few songs) background singer. The band started with the older “Firefly” and continued with their distinctive piano-driven songs.

I could really hear the influence of classical piano parts seeping into the songs, and the band was strongest when the emphasis was on Emily’s voice and piano.

Highlight: “Little World” was amazing live, with building drums that matched perfectly with accented guitar strums. It sounded like a completely different song than the album version, which lacks drums and tension/resolve.

Lowlight: Not enough people came early to catch Christy & Emily’s set.

The Mynabirds at Mercury Lounge

I saw The Mynabirds at Mercury Lounge last night.

I was impressed with the band’s use of extra percussive instruments to create a fuller sound — stomp boxes, shakers, tambourine, and a trumpet in one hand + sleigh bells in the other.

Highlights: The band played standout song “Numbers Don’t Lie” pretty early in their set, and later Laura played “Fallen Doves” (the “Generals” B-side) solo, for the first time in front of an audience.

Ume at Webster Hall: 8/2/12

Ume (pronounced “ooh-may”) opened for The Toadies and Helmet last night, and I’m glad I arrived early to catch their set.

For a band of only three people, Ume had incredible power — they blasted sound and strength out into the crowd at Webster Hall.

Frontwoman Lauren Larson’s frenetic energy and distorted guitar meant lots of movement — Ume is perfectly suited to playing on a huge stage with ample room to move about.

While some may prefer the raw energy of their live show, I prefer the nuances on their album. The standout tracks on album Phantoms are “Captive,” “Destroyer,” and “Dancing Blind.”

Foxygen + La Sera at The Echo: 7/20/12

Friday at The Echo, I caught Foxygen opening for La Sera.

Foxygen (rhymes with oxygen) consists of Sam France and Jonathan Rado, who had three musicians playing with them. Foxygen’s songs are complex and different than most current indie music — they straddle genres within songs and include elements of spoken word.

Take the Kids Off Broadway is Foxygen’s seven-song LP. “Teenage Alien Blues” is over ten minutes and “Abandon My Toys” clocks in at just over six minutes.

I preferred hearing Foxygen live, though, because the songs really came alive at the Echo — their music was much more energetic and accessible in person. Their youth also comes across more clearly live.

Hospitality at South Street Seaport

I caught Hospitality’s set at 4Knots Music Festival at South Street Seaport.

Their set was interrupted by a fire, and they sadly didn’t play “Eighth Avenue” or “Betty Wang.” The band ended strong, though, with “All Day Today.”
