Foxygen + La Sera at The Echo: 7/20/12

Friday at The Echo, I caught Foxygen opening for La Sera.

Foxygen (rhymes with oxygen) consists of Sam France and Jonathan Rado, who had three musicians playing with them. Foxygen’s songs are complex and different than most current indie music — they straddle genres within songs and include elements of spoken word.

Take the Kids Off Broadway is Foxygen’s seven-song LP. “Teenage Alien Blues” is over ten minutes and “Abandon My Toys” clocks in at just over six minutes.

I preferred hearing Foxygen live, though, because the songs really came alive at the Echo — their music was much more energetic and accessible in person. Their youth also comes across more clearly live.

La Sera playing “I Promise You”:

Hospitality at South Street Seaport

I caught Hospitality’s set at 4Knots Music Festival at South Street Seaport.

Their set was interrupted by a fire, and they sadly didn’t play “Eighth Avenue” or “Betty Wang.” The band ended strong, though, with “All Day Today.”

Neutral Milk Hotel Cover

Lera Lynn + band played a great live cover of Neutral Milk Hotel’s song “In The Aeroplane Over The Sea.”

I’d never heard a cover of this song that includes drums, which along with a perfectly-timed bolt of thunder at the end, is a nice touch:

Michael Runion Video + JJAMZ

Michael Runion of JJAMZ took some time before last night’s Webster Hall show to talk to After The Show — JJAMZ‘s debut album Suicide Pact is out now.

Plus a few shots I took of JJAMZ’s spectacular show at Webster Hall (but I was really just focused on the music):

Pavement: “Frontwards” Covers

I just discovered that Los Campesinos’ song “Frontwards” is actually a cover.

Pavement did the original “Frontwards”:

Los Campesinos succeeds in striking the balance between maintaining the original version’s catchiness while also stamping their unique sound onto it.

Appendix Out also covered “Frontwards,” offering an acoustic, more mellow take on the song:
