First time seeing First Aid Kit live, and it didn’t disappoint!
First Aid Kit played to a packed house at Irving Plaza on Saturday (and they play Sunday at Music Hall of Williamsburg).
Mike Mogis, the “Dr. Dre of indie rock” as Klara introduced him, was a special guest who sat in with the band and played mandolin.
“Blue” sounded particularly good live, and First Aid Kit played “Ghost Town” completely acoustic – with no microphones or amplification – in the middle of their set.
The audience responded well to “The Lion’s Roar” and the band’s latest single “Wolf,” but technical difficulties with Johanna’s keyboard messed up a few songs. I wish they played “Emmylou” with drums instead of acoustically — the drums are really necessary to drive the song.
Their last song was the rousing, hand-clapping “King of The World.”
Corin Tucker’s band, aka Corin Tucker Band, played Thursday night at Mercury Lounge to support their second album, Kill My Blues, which came out last week.
The crowd definitely enjoyed hearing the new batch of songs, which are slightly louder and rockier than the band’s first album 1,000 Years.
The best, catchiest song of the set was “Joey.” Here’s a good video from last week of Corin Tucker Band playing “No Bad News Tonight”:
Christy & Emily opened for Lavender Diamond last night at NY’s Mercury Lounge.
The duo was joined by a drummer, bassist, and (on a few songs) background singer. The band started with the older “Firefly” and continued with their distinctive piano-driven songs.
I could really hear the influence of classical piano parts seeping into the songs, and the band was strongest when the emphasis was on Emily’s voice and piano.
Highlight: “Little World” was amazing live, with building drums that matched perfectly with accented guitar strums. It sounded like a completely different song than the album version, which lacks drums and tension/resolve.
Lowlight: Not enough people came early to catch Christy & Emily’s set.
Check out “Bells” and “Lovers Talk” from the latest album Tic-Tac-Toe:

“Math Wiz” by Luna appeared on the band’s 1999 album The Days of Our Nights.
The song’s subject matter is opaque and the lyrics have an unsettling, almost sinister undertone.
“A 12 year old math wiz came to me in my sleep, he knew all the answers which he kept to himself, he said I’d hate to be you when the big day comes, the look on your face will be priceless.”
PAWS is a band from Glasgow, Scotland whose debut album comes out October.
Their single “Sore Tummy” sounds very promising — catchy, great grunge guitars, with additional vocals by Alice from Big Deal.
